Our English Department is vibrant and highly successful. Pupils are encouraged to be confident and inquisitive readers coupled with intellectual rigour. Girls have the opportunity to study a well-balanced curriculum across all key stages that encourages skills of analysis, oracy, creative writing and the ability to construct different text types. We are also committed to providing pupils with a wide range of opportunities which include among others, a creative writing club, English Society and Key Stage 3 Book Group. Debating and public speaking have a well-established tradition at Bromley High with senior debaters regularly reaching the finals of national competitions and our public speakers achieving significant success in the ESU Nationals. This rigorous A-level choice allows pupils to develop a love of literature as well as their critical voice. The WJEC course consists of three examinations covering a range of poetry, drama and prose works both contemporary and classical. The course also contains a coursework unit where pupils are allowed to choose texts that excite and engage them. Literature is also a popular university choice for many pupils leading to multiple career pathways.
Students wishing to study A levels at Bromley High School must achieve Grade 7’s or above at GCSE in subjects that they intend to study at A level.
