The Biology Department aims to inspire students’ wonder in and appreciation of this exciting and dynamic subject. Biology’s wide-ranging applications in healthcare, the environment and technology have the potential to change the world we live in dramatically. Biology is a trendy A-level subject at LEH. We seek to equip our Sixth Form students with the understanding, skills and enthusiasm to pursue a future in the Biological Sciences, exploring ideas and current research well beyond the A-level syllabus (Edexcel B). There is plenty on offer to enrich students’ understanding: weekly PandA (Physiology & Anatomy) Dissection club, a lecture day, a visit to the Wellcome Sanger Genome Campus and our annual Brain Day with Dr Guy Sutton. We also run ‘Biology+’, a lunchtime session designed to support students who wish to pursue the Biological Sciences at the University.
You should choose Biology if you are interested in it and enjoy scientific enquiry and practical work. If you find yourself questioning the living world around you then this is a good choice for you - although it will probably raise as many new questions as it answers. You should expect to get a Grade 7 at GCSE in Biology or in Combined Science and you should also be a competent mathematician.
