A level in Latin is a fantastic course for those who have enjoyed Latin at GCSE. Over the two years, we encourage learners to develop research and analytical skills that will empower them to become independent learners who can: • hone their linguistic competence. • Read literary texts, both prose and verse, in the original language, applying analytical and evaluative skills which show direct engagement with original texts in Latin. • Continue to develop an interest in, and enthusiasm for, the literary, historical and cultural features of the ancient world. • Develop a sensitive and analytical approach to language generally. • Understand the historical context of the literature studied, looking at some of the key moments in ancient but also Western European history. Students can expect to split their time between language work and studying set literature; both prose and verse texts with four authors usually covered over two years. Linguistically, we study all of the new grammar in the Lower Sixth and then practise the application of it through exam-style translations by authors such as Caesar, Livy, Ovid and Cicero in the Upper Sixth. The department runs regular theatre trips to productions such as the recent RSC Cicero plays. We also have visiting speakers and residential trips to support and broaden the experience students have of the Classical world.
If you have enjoyed Latin GCSE, then you will love the A level as the course naturally follows on from it. We would expect anyone who is studying the A level to have achieved at least a Grade 7 in GCSE Latin. If you love language, literature, history and politics, want to hone your analytical and critical skills, and study works that have stood the test of time and shaped our modern culture and world, then Latin is for you.
