Course summary

Bromley High School has an outstanding musical tradition, with many girls gaining places in borough and national orchestras, university music departments and music colleges. Music is at the heart of school life in every aspect – socially, academically and spiritually. Pupils are encouraged to develop and share their music within the school, the local area, London venues and abroad and greatly benefit from a specialist music wing that includes a purpose-built recital room, two iMac suites and multiple practice rooms. Girls have the opportunity to perform in a rich and varied range of concerts, recitals, and competitions in addition to the wealth of weekly music groups. Over 350 individual music lessons are taught each week, delivered by a 23-strong team of visiting professional musicians and girls can take both ABRSM and Trinity College exams at the school. Pupils are encouraged to develop and share their music within the school, the local area, London venues and abroad and greatly benefit from the ‘All Steinway Status’, the specialist music wing that includes a purpose-built recital room, two iMac suites, multiple practice rooms, a Steinway concert grand and model B. Through the interrelated disciplines of analysis, composition and performance, the Edexcel Music A level is designed to broaden musical experience and interests, develop practical musicianship and extend critical listening skills. As with the GSCE, practical music-making is at the heart of the course. 60% of the qualification is coursework to include solo performing (minimum 8 minutes) and two composition tasks (free or set to a brief). The written examination provides an in-depth look at set works taken from six areas of study: Vocal, Instrumental, Film, Popular, Fusion and New Directions. The full academic nature of A-level music opens the door to a variety of degree and career pathways.
