• At the Advanced Level, the girls study the OCR A syllabus, which provides an excellent foundation to support the further study of biological courses at university. • We take an investigative approach to studying biology in which girls participate in many investigations, including fieldwork which is currently undertaken on a residential trip to the coast of Dorset at an A-level field centre. • Biology is a very popular A Level, providing an excellent preparation for further study of either a natural science subject or clinical courses such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science or pharmacy. • A-level Biologists also get some hands-on experience with genomics on an ‘Amgen Day’ where they have a go at doing PCR, using restriction enzymes on bacterial plasmids, loading gels using gel electrophoresis and transforming bacteria with a fluorescence gene.
The entrance requirements for the Sixth Form are 5 GCSE passes graded 9-5 with 9-7 in the subjects chosen at A Level. To be eligible for an Academic Scholarship for the Sixth Form, a candidate would need to achieve grades 7-9 in all their GCSE subjects.
