PRE at Norwich School aims to facilitate critical thinking, enable understanding and promote intellectual curiosity through collaborative learning to broaden personal development. It gives pupils a chance to explore their own response to different approaches to life and different perspectives on some of the big questions which all human beings face. It enables them to consider complex moral, philosophical and religious questions in a structured, justified and intelligent way and, at the same time, gives them an ability to understand and appreciate alternative and equally valid points of view. The department invites pupils to consider complex ethical, philosophical and religious questions in a structured and intelligent way, promoting the appreciation of alternative and equally valid points of view. In so doing, we encourage empathy, compassion, understanding and tolerance towards all religious traditions. At A-level we follow the AQA syllabus. Component 1: Philosophy of religion and ethics: arguments for the existence of God; evil and suffering; religious experience; religious language; miracles, self and life after death; issues of human life and death; issues of animal life and death; an introduction to meta ethics; free will and moral responsibility; conscience, Bentham and Kant. Component 2: Study of religion (Christianity): sources of wisdom and authority; God/gods/ultimate reality; self, death and the afterlife; good conduct and key moral principles; expression of religious identity; religion, gender and sexuality; religion and science; religion and secularisation; religion and religious pluralism.
Admission to the school is a conditional place based on achieving a minimum of 6x6 grade passes at GCSE; this is a minimum entry requirement and higher grades might be necessary in intended A Level subjects, namely the Sciences and Maths.
Exams: Two papers (3 hours each), each worth 50%.
