The mind is something intangible that exists within our brain; an unseen process of enzymes, chemicals and electric currents. But why is it that some people suffer from stress or mental illness? Or that others are considered abnormal for deviating from social norms? Psychology looks at questions like these and more. It’s a fascinating science with cutting edge research that has real world applications that you are bound to find interesting. A-level Psychology will give you an understanding of the way people think and why people behave in certain ways. You will learn a variety of skills including analytical thinking, improved communication, problem solving and many more that will prepare you for a diverse range of future careers. Psychology is classed by UCAS as one of the ‘science’ A levels, so can help students gain access to degree courses with these requirements, such as nursing, mental health or social work.
A level Psychology will be a brand new subject to most of the students who chose it at KC, therefore the most important requirement is a genuine interest and passion to learn about human behaviour. Given the scientific nature of Psychology, students should be reasonably confident using basic maths skills such as means, mode and median, and interpreting graphical data. An ability to write clearly and concisely is advantageous, however essay writing and evaluative writing skills will be developed throughout the course. While we do not enforce strict entry requirements, students who achieve below grade 5 in GCSE Maths, English and Science will find elements of the A level course challenging.
Assessment takes the form of three 2 hour examinations at the end of the course. You will be examined on each topic you are taught. Each paper is of equal weighting and will follow the same format, consisting of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.
