If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then studying History at Stonyhurst College might be for you. Anyone who comes to Stonyhurst is immediately struck by the sense of history in the buildings and in the traditions. We have a significant collection of books and historical artefacts in the Arundell Library simply waiting to be discovered. The History Department Stonyhurst aims to develop interest in both Modern and Early Modern history. Topics can be selected from the Eleventh to the Twentieth Century. We aim to develop the knowledge and understanding of as wide a range of periods as possible and to take advantage of the spectacular array of source material that is available to us in the Stonyhurst Museum. Pupils are very well prepared for university, as demonstrated by the high levels of success achieved in further education by former students in recent years. Higher level: Paper Three: An additional paper studying: Europe and the First World War (1871-1918), European States in the Inter-War Years (1918-1939) and Diplomacy in Europe (1919-1945). Our IB Diploma Programme is designed to produce highly-educated all-rounders who embrace social responsibility, intercultural awareness, and a duty to local and global communities to make an increasingly complex world a better place.
Entry to the Sixth Form is based upon interview (via video or telephone call, if international), a satisfactory performance in the entrance examination, completion of a 500-word handwritten personal statement and submission of satisfactory school reports and school reference. We would also expect good performance at GCSE (or equivalent). Applicants would normally be required to have obtained a minimum of 5 Grade 6 passes at GCSE (or equivalent). Applicants for the Cambridge Technical course would be expected to achieve Grade 4 passes at GCSE including Maths and English Language, together with 3 other Grade 4s at GCSE. Some international pupils may be required to sit the Oxford Placement test. UK boarders will also be required to complete an overnight trial board if becoming a boarder.
