The course is studied as a full A Level linear course (two years). Topics studied are similar to those touched on at GCSE but are studied in more depth. It also includes the study of two literary works comprising one film and one novel/play/ selection of poems and the development of independent research skills on a topic of personal interest. A Level German helps students develop confident, effective communication skills in the German language and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where German is spoken. This specification develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context. The four-unit specification requires students to develop their ability to write and speak in German with accurate grammar and syntax for a range of purposes and to understand written or spoken German in a variety of contexts and genres. A Level German is particularly suitable for students who have studied GCSE German or the AQA Certificate in German and wish to study the language at a higher level. Students study technological and social change, looking at the multicultural nature of German-speaking society. They will study highlights of German-speaking artistic culture, including art and architecture, and will learn how Germany's political landscape was formed. Students will explore the influence of the past on present-day German-speaking communities. Students will study texts and film and will have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of their choice. Assessment tasks will be varied and cover listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students also attend a conversation practice with a native speaker to help them prepare the oral.
