Course summary

This dynamic and reflective two year course enables pupils to develop their ideas and skills in a wide range of media including painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography (both analogue and digital), ceramics, installation, film and video. There is much emphasis on experimentation and discussion of ideas, underpinned by drawing from observation which is seen as the backbone to this course. Weekly life classes teach pupils to engage with essential elements of composition, proportion, spatial awareness and three-dimensional form. Throughout pupils learn to contextualise their own work through studying the methodologies and practice of other artists. There are visits to galleries and museums, both locally and internationally. The ongoing workbook is integral as is work created outside the workbook.

Entry requirements

A – Level Art builds on the skills and understanding acquired at GCSE, but this is not a compulsory requirement, students will be considered on individual merit. An enthusiasm to extend one’s knowledge and a preparedness to work hard is a requirement and will assist the progress of candidates opting for this course. Good drawing skills coupled with a willingness to experiment are important. Commitment, imagination, determination, and the ability to work independently are pre-requisites of the course.
