Course summary

The goal of technological knowledge is the improvement of the condition of humankind. The method of developing technological knowledge is design, but there is no single design method – it depends on the nature of the problem to be solved or the opportunity to be realized. This course allows pupils to explore and study the Design process, the role of Designers, Product development and Product innovation as well as developing an understanding and knowledge of Materials and Green design. Pupils will undertake a series of practical and investigative tasks, as well as an individual design and make project identified by the pupils themselves. HL pupils would extend their SL course by studying User-centered design, Sustainability, Innovation and Markets and Commercial Production, their design project would be extended by working with an external client producing a commercially viable product. The course aims to develop creative problem-solvers who are able to respond critically and resourcefully to the demands of a technological society. All HL and SL Design Technology pupils will study the SL Topic Titles, only HL pupils will study the HL Topic Titles.
