Teaching in the Sixth Form consists of regular practice of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as courses in grammar, literature and subjects of topical interest. Assessment follows the linear model, rather than a modular one, meaning that pupils sit exams at the end of the two-year course. The department is supported by an excellent team of Modern Foreign Language Assistants, with whom Sixth Form pupils will have weekly conversation classes.
French, German and Spanish are available at A level to pupils with at least grade 7 at GCSE. Experience shows that pupils from lower Fifth Form sets and those with less than a grade 7 at GCSE experience difficulties with the jump from GCSE to A level demands. Such candidates should consult with the Head of Department before embarking on the course. Bilingual students should, likewise, discuss with the Head of Department the possibility of taking the A level with reduced lesson time (eg in E block) thus freeing themselves to take three other subjects in addition.
