We will be using the Edexcel specification (9CH0). The course is a traditional one and gives equal weighting to the three main branches of Chemistry: Physical, Inorganic and Organic. The course is taught in a linear fashion and practical work will form a core of the course to enable student to cover the following topics: • Atomic structure and the Periodic table • Bonding and Structure • Redox reactions & electrochemistry • Inorganic Chemistry • Formulae, Equations and Amounts of Substance • Organic Chemistry • Modern Analytical Techniques • Kinetics • Equilibria • Acid-base Equilibria • Energetics • Transition Metal Chemistry
A prospective A level student would be expected to have a good grade 7 in GCSE or IGCSE Chemistry, if taken, or the equivalent in the Chemistry component of GCSE/IGCSE Double Award Science. A good grade (7 or A minimum) in GCSE/IGCSE Mathematics is also essential.
