Course summary

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is taken alongside A Levels and is essentially a research-based project into an area of interest. Students can choose any topic or area of interest, as long as it is not part of the existing curriculum for one of their A Level choices. The EPQ is worth the same amount of points as an AS Level. More importantly, universities and employers like the EPQ, as the skills it builds and demonstrates – such as planning and decision making, research skills, evaluating personal progress, and presentation skills – are applicable to work and university success. In fact, some universities will consider reducing their entry requirements if an applicant produces a high quality EPQ project. If students know what their likely degree course is going to be, it makes sense to research a topic that will link well with the content of that course. This helps with the UCAS personal statement and can be a topic to discuss if called for interview. It also proves more stimulating, as students study something they really find interesting.
