Course summary

Taught by subject specialists who have a both a wealth of experience and a deep fascination for their subject, Psychology is a highly relevant subject that takes a scientific approach to understanding the mind, whilst encouraging critical thinking and debate. Psychology fits equally well alongside science or arts-based subjects, as the breadth of the subject is vast: ranging from brain activity in psychopaths to social factors in mental health. The curriculum is pertinent to today’s society and students are encouraged to apply their knowledge to current affairs and world events. Students develop a plethora of transferable skills that are excellent preparation for university and beyond. With applications as diverse as marketing, consultancy and clinical psychology, studying Psychology can be a gateway to an absorbing career.

Entry requirements

The vast majority of the girls in Upper V (Year 11) at The Abbey remain for Sixth Form. Potential new Sixth Formers sit a Sixth Form Entrance Examination (comprising of 2 subject papers) at either Scholarship or Standard level. References are obtained from current Schools and candidates are invited in for interview. Offers are then made, subject to candidates meeting GCSE requirements which are typically: 8 subjects at 5 / Grade B or above with 7/ Grade A or above in subjects to be studied at A level or Higher Level IB. If the subject is only available in the Sixth Form, a 7 /Grade A or above in relevant subjects will be expected e.g. in Maths for Economics.
