In A-level English Language, we follow the OCR course; this necessitates close focus on the English language in its widest sense and involves analysis of power, gender and technology and how it affects language use. Second year modules examine child language acquisition and language change over time. English Literature adheres to the AQA specification and takes in modules such as social and political protest writing, comedy and tragedy; there is room for coursework submissions looking at modern poetry and the modern novel. Authors studied include Miller, Hosseini, Crace, Blake and, naturally, Shakespeare.
Year 11 students transfer automatically into the Sixth Form, provided that they have gained at least five subjects at grade 6 and above, including English Language and mathematics, and with no less than a grade 6 (ideally a 7, 8 or 9 grade) in the subjects, or related, with which they wish to continue at A level. In addition, the student’s record of conduct and attitude must meet the appropriately high expectations of the school’s Sixth Form
