The new A Level History allows students to broaden their historical knowledge by allowing students to study the history of more than one country, to study a minimum of 20% British history and to study topics from a chronological range of at least 200 years.
A Level History is a challenging and in depth qualification and students will be expected to do individual research on top of the work that is covered in lesson. Students will be expected to analyse and evaluate different types of historical sources and reach conclusions relating to their validity and utility. Students will be expected to read journals and take an interest in current events to enrich their study of history. Students should have achieved a B grade or higher at GCSE to be successful in this A Level.
THE A LEVEL CONSISTS OF 3 SEPARATE UNITS; Unit 1: Breadth study The Age of the Crusades, c1071–1149 (2 hour 30 min exam, 40% of final mark) This component is the study of a period of over 100 years, looking at change and continuity over this time. Unit 2: Depth study The Making of Modern Britain, 1951-2007 (2 hour 30 min exam, 40% of final mark) This component allows students to student a shorter period of history and the impact that events in this time had. Units may include: Unit 3: Historical Investigation (3000 – 3500 words, 20% of final mark) This unit allows students to complete their own investigation into a period of history. It can be British or non-British and should be linked to one of the units that they have studied.
