The Department aims to develop and interest in and an enthusiasm for the French language, by teaching in a lively and communicative way, using the latest technologies, francophone songs and films. It also aims to assist students to becoming independent learners by ensuring that they are actively involved in their learning and increasing their motivation and confidence. Students will develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts and genres and communicate confidently, clearly and imaginatively in French. Students will develop their awareness and understanding aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of a francophone country. In the A1 year, students will concentrate on two themes: social issues and trends and artistic culture (through music, festivals and traditions) and political and artistic culture (through media). Students will develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills from a variety of authentic sources, covering different contexts, registers, styles and genres. In the A2 year, students will focus on two other themes: immigration and the multicultural society in French and the period of the French Occupation and Resistance. In the course of the two years, students will be also studying in depth a film 'Les Choristes' by Christophe Barratier and a book 'No et Moi' by Delphine de Vigan.
French, Spanish, German at degree level require the subject to A Level. Other languages (Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese etc.) can normally be started if a student has completed a modern language to A Level.
