Course summary

Design Technology at A-level is the course for you if you have an interest in the way the design of products and places influences peoples’ lives. With its university-style, studio-based learning, the department provides a fantastic introduction to the skills required for careers in the fields of architecture, art and design, graphics, product design, engineering and project management – to name only a few. You will follow the AQA Design Technology: Product Design course which has a strong coursework element – 50% of the final grade. Two exams are focusing on technical designing and making principles – worth the remaining 50%. The coursework is a ‘design and make’ portfolio where you will work with real clients who provide the design brief and feedback which will influence the development of the design. This will be manufactured by you in the school workshop using whatever technology you see fit. This may be traditional tools or more modern CAD/CAM methods such as laser cutting and/or 3D printing. The main project will be started at the end of Year 12 and will continue throughout Year 13. The theory will be covered in lessons during dedicated lessons. This is an exciting course that is immensely rewarding as it mirrors the professional life of a designer.
