Course summary

The study of Politics helps people to know their rights, entitlements and obligations as citizens, and informs them how the political process can be influenced in many ways other than voting. This is particularly important in an era of online news – often reactive - when the ability to step back from the screen and fully weigh what is being said (and why) is of great importance. It can lead to developing not just academic intelligences but also emotional intelligences with the ability to reflect and consider. This course enables pupils to determine what they believe and why they believe it. Being able to express beliefs accurately with justification is an essential life skill, as is the skill of academically debating sensitive topics. Additionally, politics is very much a ‘live’ subject, being topical, relevant, and ever evolving. Politics will prepare pupils for their opportunity to formally participate in the political process by voting. Each student gains a firm grounding in how to effectively exercise that entitlement. Political knowledge from this course gives a better understanding to both contemporary Britain and the USA and how both countries relate to their neighbours, which is important for any student wishing to study or work in the USA.
