The Department aim is to equip students with the ability to reason in a logical fashion whilst developing their understanding and curiosity, in a way that promotes confidence, interest and enjoyment. We intend to instill the skills required to investigate real life problems in a quantitative manner by modelling, simulation, approximation and estimation. It is also our aim to be able to repeatedly refine such models so that they lead to increasingly accurate inferences and predictions. In each of the two years of the A Level Maths course we study Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics topics. These are assessed by written papers at the end of the second year. Our 'Double Mathematicians' follow the A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths courses in the first and second years respectively. They will be constructing mathematical proofs, as well as using more advanced techniques in calculus. Applications of mathematics are studied in both Further Mechanics and Decision, and ideas of mathematical modelling are developed across the curriculum.
Selection is based on a personal interview involving the Headmaster, the prospective student and his/her parents. If it is felt that the student will fl ourish at Hurtwood and benefi t from the experience, then an unconditional place is off ered. There is no entry exam, nor a minimum set of entry requirements.
The Department follows the A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths courses which are assessed solely by external examinations.
