Design and Technology at GCSE is a challenging, demanding and stimulating course. In D&T, pupils work with a variety of materials, equipment and graphical presentation techniques. It can also help to develop skills that will complement many other areas of academic study; with strengths in problem-solving, critical thinking, and communicating with others. Wider topics covered include material properties, sustainability and the environment, links to maths and science, along with industrial manufacturing techniques, the work of well know designers, and health and safety. Design and Technology project work promotes an iterative process. Great outcomes can be achieved through a mixture of designing, testing and refining ideas when working through a range of contextual units of work. The department offers O Block pupils the opportunity to apply for the Arkwright Scholarship every year, a national scheme which rewards excellence in design and engineering disciplines.
Entry to the Sixth Form is subject to a minimum requirement of 5 GCSEs at Grade 6 unless there is a compelling reason to modify this requirement, and in any event, where this is necessary it will usually lead to the applicant being offered a BTEC or BTEC with one A Level as a Sixth Form course. Candidates must achieve at least a Grade 6 at GCSE in any subject to be studied at A level, and a Grade 7 in the case of Mathematics, any Science or a Modern Foreign Language.
