Firstly, universities and employers look very favourably at students doing the EPQ, and it will give you the edge over others both in interviews and on your UCAS form. Secondly, if you are interested in a topic, or just want to stretch yourself as a learner, this is for you. Without exception, students who have done the EPQ report that it was incredibly valuable and “perhaps the best learning experience I’ve ever had”. For some, it even confirms or changes their direction and life choices! The EPQ prepares you for university study and life by letting you: • Experience deeper or wider study than is possible at A-level • Explore a specialised topic • Gain confidence to work independently and creatively • Practise essay writing, presentation, reflection skills and independent research. This qualification offers you an opportunity to become a competent independent learner. You will develop skills and knowledge by producing a piece of work which is an extension of your current studies, skills or interests. You decide the title and the format of your project, and, once it is approved, will work on the project and accompanying log for some months. The project can be: • An extended piece of written work • An investigation • A piece of practical work • A performance • A report on an expedition or long-term activity you have committed to • A piece of creative work or an artefact Once completed, you will present your project to an audience. The EPQ consists of three equally important elements: the product, a presentation on the project, and the log (a record of the process of working on the product and the presentation).
Candidates must have a minimum of 6 GCSEs grade 6 and above, including maths and English, and grade 7s in the A-level subjects they wish to study (where relevant).
The EPQ is assessed holistically by your supervisor right at the end on all three elements mentioned above: the product, the presentation, and the log. It is then moderated by the board. The EPQ focuses on skills so will be assessed against the following criteria: ‘Managing, Using resources Developing and Realising and Reviewing
