Course summary

An A level in German is seen as a very desirable subject by universities. Having an A-Level in a language shows you are a competent linguist and is sought after by employers in all spheres of work. It is more than just a qualification and we hope that it will be the catalyst for exploring the language, culture and history of the German-speaking world. German is a very important language in Europe and is widely used in business. Germany continues to play a leading role in Europe in politics, business and trade. Learning a language at A level helps you really become an independent, confident language speaker. The A level German course enhances students’ linguistic skills and it promotes and develops their capacity for critical thinking on the basis of their knowledge and understanding of the language, culture and society of the country or countries where the language is spoken. It develops an advanced control of the language system to convey meaning, using spoken and written skills, including an extended range of vocabulary, for both practical and intellectual purposes as increasingly confident, accurate and independent users of the language. Students will develop their ability to interact effectively with users of the language in speech and in writing, including through online media. They will engage critically with intellectually stimulating texts, films and other materials in the original language, developing an appreciation of sophisticated and creative uses of the language and understanding them within their cultural and social context. One important aspect of the course is to develop knowledge about matters central to the society and culture, past and present within German speaking countries. Students will equip themselves with transferable skills such as autonomy, resourcefulness, creativity, critical thinking, and linguistic, cultural and cognitive flexibility that will enable them to proceed to further study or to employment.
