The department offers Edexcel A level. We are justifiably proud of the very high standard of academic and practical work produced in the department (well above the national average). Christ’s Hospital benefits from a fully flexible, 500-seat courtyard theatre which is the nerve centre of the Drama Department. We also have a black box studio space and a useful breakout space in the new Glass Foyer of the theatre. The course demands commitment, curiosity and a passion for all aspects of Drama and Theatre. These are the most important attributes for A level students. It is not necessary to have taken Drama at GCSE but you do need to be a creative, collaborative and proactive individual who is keen to develop an understanding of how theatre works. The practical element of the course offers students the opportunity to perform or to focus on technical and design skills. The written side of the course allows students to develop useful analytical and evaluative skills as well as an in-depth understanding of specialised theatrical terminology and the work of different theatre makers.
All applicants should be on course to achieve a minimum of 4 A (level 7 grades) and 4 B (level 6 grades). The A grades should be in the subjects they wish to study at A level.
Paper 1 - Performance piece - 40% External Exam Practical Paper 2 - Design or performance - 20% External Exam Practical Paper 3 - 150 minutes - 40% Written Exam - Elements of Theatre
