The study of History is vital for students in order to develop compassion, curiosity, a critical eye and, in particular, global awareness. The History A level allows students an opportunity to broaden their Historical horizons in a diverse manner. Building on a strong academic tradition all students will study a range of periods with focused themes up to and including the 20th century, around a ‘core’ of either Medieval, Early Modern or Late Modern History. A good understanding of written and spoken English is necessary in order to access the particular source material for these courses.
All applicants should be on course to achieve a minimum of 4 A (level 7 grades) and 4 B (level 6 grades). The A grades should be in the subjects they wish to study at A level.
Medieval – Conquest, control and resistance Papers 1-3 are written exams. Assessments will examine students breadth and depth of historical knowledge. Paper 1 - 135 minutes - 30% The Crusades, c1095-1204 Paper 2 - 90 minutes - 20% Anglo-Saxon England and the Anglo-Norman Kingdom, c1053-1106 Paper 3 - 135 minutes - 30% The Golden Age of Spain - 1474-1598 Coursework - The Suffragette Movement - 20% Early Modern – Revolution, change and progress Papers 1-3 are written exams.
