Modern Languages A Students study a wide range of non-literary texts in a variety of media, for example newspaper articles, film, advertising and propaganda material, as well as literary works from different genres and periods including texts in translation. They are encouraged to engage with issues and ideas of global significance and to use critical thinking skills to be able to understand the nature of the experience that is communicated in a text and the ways in which such an experience is communicated. Students will investigate the nature of language itself and the ways in which it shapes, and is influenced by, identity and culture. The course also deepens the understanding of a wide variety of concepts explored through these literary and non-literary texts in order to interpret, analyse, evaluate and then communicate this understanding in a clear, organised and developed way in spoken and written form. Modern Language B The study of a foreign language is a compulsory part of the IB programme at either Higher or Standard Level. The Standard and Higher Level courses are both demanding and rewarding, and at both levels you will have the opportunity to increase your competence in the written and spoken language, whilst also developing a knowledge and interest in the culture of the countries where your chosen language is spoken. Standard and Higher Level courses offer a demanding yet rewarding educational experience. These courses provide students with an opportunity to enhance their competence and confidence in all skills. By engaging in these courses, students can develop a deeper understanding of grammatical structures and broaden their vocabulary. Furthermore, they have the chance to consolidate their knowledge and comprehension skills while delving into the rich cultures of various countries. Through exploring literature, history, and contemporary issues, students not only expand their knowledge but also foster a genuine interest in diverse cultures. These courses serve as a platform for students to refine their language abilities, unlocking new avenues for personal growth and academic success.
For both Standard and Higher Level, the individual oral assessment is based on one or more core themes. In addition, Higher Level students will be assessed on an extract from a literary source. We encourage all language students to spend some time in the ‘target language country’ in order to develop their oral fluency over the course of the diploma.
