English Literature is an exciting and engaging subject that enables you to experience the world and its many cultural variations through a range of thought-provoking texts from across the ages. As well as exploring great works of literature, you will enhance your ability to analyse, argue and debate and you will also apply a range of critical perspectives to texts. A key part of the course is analysing and reading in different ways while exploring how meanings can be negotiated and created between texts and readers. English Literature develops highly valued skills and so is considered a facilitating subject for university admission. By studying Literature at A Level, you will develop advanced written and spoken communication skills and become adept at developing reasoned arguments, whilst uncovering layers of meaning and appreciating the power of the written and spoken word. Studying Literature will help you gain entry to a huge number of courses and career paths but is especially useful for courses or careers in Creative Writing, Journalism, Drama, Media Studies, Marketing and Advertising, Business Studies, History and Publishing, to name a few. It is also a subject often studied by Law students who value the way it develops both analytical and communication skills.
Whilst there is no specific entry requirement, students who do not gain a grade 6 or higher at GCSE English Literature will find this course very challenging. It is essential to have an interest in reading, watching and studying texts and a desire to debate and explore.
