
Candidates will develop a knowledge and understanding of the legal system and an ability to evaluate its operation and performance. The specification introduces substantive law and requires simple application of aspects of criminal law and the law of tort in civil law. The study of law helps develop the learner’s analytical ability and critical thinking. It also develops problem solving skills through the application of legal rules. Study at A Level provides a useful background for the further study of law either as the main subject or subsidiary part of a degree, foundation degree or for the many professional qualifications which have a law component. The course covers a variety of topics designed to give students a broad overview of the English legal system.
For all Level 3 courses, students require a total of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 or equivalent in vocational subjects. This course has an additional requirement of: Grade 4 or above in English
Assessment: Paper 1: The nature of law and the English Legal System and Criminal law • This will be assessed in a 2-hour exam • There will be a combination of multiple choice, short answer, and extended writing questions • 33% of A Level Paper 2: The nature of law and the English Legal System and Tort • This will be assessed in a 2-hour exam • There will be a combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions • 33% of A Level Paper 3: The nature of law and the English Legal System and Contract law or Human Rights • This will be assessed in a 2-hour exam • There will be a combination of multiple choice, short answer, and extended writing questions • 33% of A Level
