Course summary

Course content Further Maths is a course that not only requires a great deal of application but also a real desire to study some challenging mathematics. It is held in very high regard by all universities and can prove to be a great differentiator when applying to the most prestigious ones. Other skills developed Further Pure Maths: This is an extension of the Pure Maths course. It focuses on a number of different topics that will not have been met at GCSE. These include matrices, vector analysis and the basis of all maths university courses, mathematical proof. Further Mechanics: This work builds on the mechanics in the A level Maths course and looks at the principles of work and energy, elasticity and centres of mass. Further Statistics: This also builds on the foundation work studied in the A level course. In it, students work on regression analysis as well as hypothesis testing and correlation. Career value Students who are considering taking degrees with significant mathematical content, such as engineering, software development, and any of the sciences will benefit greatly from taking Further Mathematics. Employers are looking for people who can think logically, analyse a situation rigorously and then make rational decisions on the basis of their conclusions. These transferable skills are an integral part of a mathematicians training and make those with an A level in Further Mathematics very marketable. A student’s view “Although seen by many as a subject only for the mathematical genius, Further Maths is really for those who like maths and enjoy a challenge. The extra knowledge and understanding which is gained into the world of mathematics is well worth the hard work.”
