
Why study the course Criminology (from Latin crīmen, "accusation"; and Greek -λογία, -logia) is the scientific study of criminal behaviour, on individual, social and natural levels, and how it can be managed, controlled and prevented. This course will enable students to use theories of criminality to analyse criminal situations and make recommendations for policy. Students also develop the knowledge and skills to research policy in practice, assess campaigns for changes in awareness and examine information to review verdicts in criminal cases. The main purpose of the WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Criminology is mainly to use the qualification to support access to higher education degree courses, such as: BSc Criminology BA Criminology BA Criminology and Criminal Justice BSc (Hons) Criminology and Psychology LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology BA (Hons) Criminology BSc (Hons) Psychology and Sociology BSc Criminology with Law Alternatively, the qualification allows learners to gain the required understanding and skills to be able to consider employment within some aspects of the criminal justice system, e.g. the National Probation Service, the Courts and Tribunals Service or the National Offender Management Service. The qualification also provides the learner with knowledge and skills that could lead to employment with the Police, Prison Service as well as Social Services
Grade 5 in English (Language or Literature), Grade 5 in History, Sociology or Citizenship
The course is assessed via 4 units. “ units are internally assessed and are based on controlled assessments set by the exam board. The remaining 2 units are externally assessed via exams. Each unit is worth 25% of the final grade and all units need to be passed to gain the full qualification Year 1 Unit 1 Changing Awareness of Crime Mandatory Internally assessed Unit 2 Criminological Theories Mandatory Externally assessed Year 2 Unit 3 Crime Scene to Courtroom Mandatory Internally assessed Unit 4 Crime and Punishment Mandatory Externally assessed
