Chemistry
Course summary
In this context driven course, you will learn the core theory through study of current applications of chemistry. You will be introduced to organic, inorganic and physical chemistry while learning about topics such as fuels, colours and the chemical industry. There is a clear development and further in depth exploration of topics covered in KS4. Activities include practical work, problem solving, data analysis, modelling with ICT, research and presentation. In the second year of the A Level course there is greater emphasis on the design of molecules and materials to fit a purpose, such as polymers, dyes and medicines. Their analysis and synthesis are also considered. The ideas from Year 12 are expanded further, drawing on prior knowledge and understanding. Ideas about enthalpy, first studied with respect to fuels, are later used to explain solubility, whilst ideas about medicines and biological molecules are explored in greater depth, with some significant cross over with the Biology course. Practical skills are develop further fully preparing students for university based laboratory work. There is an expectation that the time given to lessons each week will be matched by students outside of school as time to undertake independent study and homework.
