Economics is an academic subject that is held in high regard by major universities. As a subject it combines well with both the Arts and Science disciplines. The course is fairly rigorous in its approach so a taste for mathematical-type reasoning is useful although the mathematical content of the course is low. In the study of microeconomics students will learn how markets operate, why they fail, what governments can do to intervene, the nature of competition amongst firms and how firms make pricing and output decisions. In the study of macroeconomics students will learn about key government objectives in the economy and policies to control unemployment, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates and economic growth. Students will develop an understanding of economic models and apply these to the UK and the global economy as they examine the UK’s economic relationships with other countries.
