Compulsory topics Crime and Deviance. Theory and Methods Why Study? A Level Sociology allows students to develop a range of transferable skills including independent research, interpretation and analysis of data, evaluation of theoretical debates and empirical evidence, production of well focused written reports and essays, team work and presentation skills. Students are encouraged to read widely around the topics covered in class Sociology students have successfully progressed onto a range of university degrees including Law, History, Sociology, Social Sciences, Politics, Criminology, Psychology, Media, Journalism, Business, Education, Nursing, Health Studies, and Social Policy. What Our Students Say Sociology has fascinated me due to how it explores society’s influence on individuals and groups within society. Sociology is everywhere, and it explains most aspects of life and why humans behave the way that they do within a social context. It explores topical issues, injustices and structures within society that are interesting to divulge into, for example exploring the alternative purpose of education, inequalities in schools, criminal justice systems and the family. It allows you to constantly question the world around us and forces you to consider multiple viewpoints about why certain things work in the way that they do, while also allowing you to come to your own conclusions about the theories presented to you. I enjoy learning about the status quo as Sociology presents me with theories that align with it, challenge it, and question it. I intend to continue to study it further at university. I would always recommend this course to those who are curious and willing to think critically about the world around them, as it is a fascinating subject that delves deep into theories that assess the society in which we live.
Grade 6 in Sociology if taken. If not then a 6 in English or a humanities subject.
