Course summary

Through a practical design and make project students have the opportunity to investigate a context or solve a design problem. They are encouraged to think creatively and to learn and demonstrate skill and knowledge across a range of materials and techniques iIn order to reach high attainment levels, students are required to apply an iterative design approach to a real life brief. They must apply a commercial design approach to their work, reflecting how a designer might deal with a design problem and its resolution. Other skills developed The course is largely practical in nature, hence knowledge and understanding is acquired in order to apply it to the solution of a practical problems which occur in everyday life and commercial contexts. Students develop and sustain their own innovation, creativity and technological capability to produce high quality products. They develop an awareness and understanding of current product design and technological activity from a historical perspective through studying fashion and textiles design history. Students are taught about fibre and fabrics characteristics, industrial practice, sustainability and new and emerging technologies that are relevant to a designer working within industry today. Students are encouraged to work closely with a client and use an iterative design approach in order to meet their design needs. Students use ICT to enhance their design and technology capability, and they develop evaluation skills in order to become informed and discerning consumers. Career value The course provides skills and knowledge for those who are interested in working in the field of Design and Technology within the Fashion and Textile industry. This will be particularly relevant to students looking to pursue careers within fashion or textiles technologist, fashion illustration, industrial design, fashion design, fashion promotion and marketing, textile designer, textile engineering and fashion journalist. Students develop skills that contribute to an excellent portfolio of work. Many students have used their portfolios to successfully apply to Art Foundation courses.

How you'll be assessed

A Level (Year 13) Component 1 – Paper 1: Technical principles (2.5 hours examination) 25% of total A Level mark. Set by AQA and externally marked. Component 2 - Paper 2: Designing and making principles (1.5 hours examination) 25% of total A Level mark. Set by AQA and externally marked. Component 3: Independent Design and Make Project (Non exam assessment [NEA]) 50% of total A Level mark. This unit is based on a context and brief identified by the student. The written or digital portfolio is marked by the centre and externally moderated by AQA.
