Course summary

We aim to offer you a course which is relevant and meaningful and which encompasses different periods, nations, societies and cultures. You will undertake a Breadth and Depth study at A-Level. The Breadth study will explore the fascinating world of ‘The Tudors 1485-1603.’ Alongside this you will undertake a Depth Study on ‘Democracy and Nazism, 1918-1945.’ You will be examined in both Breadth and Depth studies. You will also undertake a historical investigation. This will give you the opportunity to demonstrate the historical skills and understanding you have acquired throughout the course by researching and writing a piece of History. In preparation for the historical investigation you will study Spain 1478-1598 before selecting an enquiry question which focuses on a particular theme / issue / development from this period of Spanish history. Staff will be on hand to support you throughout the process.   The skills that lie at the heart of history are transferable to the world of work and business and to everyday life. History also teaches us valuable life skills that can help us grow as people, understand ourselves and the people around us more and play a meaningful role in society. This course is suited to students who have a keen interest in history and an enquiring mind. The aims of this course are to develop your interest in and enthusiasm for history and an understanding of its value and significance. The course will enable you to acquire an understanding of different identities within society and an appreciation of social, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity through the study of aspects of British and non-British history. The course will help you improve as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with curious and enquiring minds

Entry requirements

To study this course you will need to achieve 36 - 48 points and a Grade 5 in GCSE History Calculating your Point Score • Points have the same numerical value as the grade achieved. For example a Grade 5 is equivalent to 5 points. • Combined Science GCSE counts as two GCSEs and the two grades should be combined. For example a 7/6 would be 13 points. • For students who have studied a Level 2 BTEC Qualification the following conversions should be used: Distinction* : 8 Points Distinction: 7 Points Merit: 6 Points Pass: 5 Points

How you'll be assessed

Examinations - 2 papers 2.5 hours each - 80% of final grade Coursework ( The Historical Investigation) - 20% of final grade
