

Course outline Chemistry is an exciting, interesting and highly rewarding discipline to study at school, university and beyond. Chemists are always trying to make sense of the world around them and the A level course will start students on the long journey to do just that. Chemistry is a very broad and challenging subject, giving students a solid academic foundation for further studies in a range of disciplines. Lesson structure and expectations The specification is taught by two teachers. Work will consist of a variety of lesson styles, including practical work, lectures, discussions, student research and presentation. There will be at least two practical sessions per week in the laboratory. The practical endorsement element of the course will take place during normal teaching lessons and students will be required to keep a practical log book. Visits to outside lectures and laboratories are undertaken when the opportunity arises. • Homework will be set each week, to include calculations, comprehension, essays, summaries and examination questions. Home work should be completed to a high standard and handed in by the deadline set. • Background reading and research on current topics will be expected. • Notes should be kept up to date and revision summaries made. • Practical reports should be written up in the practical log book and handed in by the deadline set. Course requirements A grade 4 in English and grade 6 in mathematics, as well as a grade 6 in biology or a 6-6 in combined science. Next steps Chemists find employment in a wide variety of careers, including research, chemical engineering, teaching, water and food analysis, hospitals and breweries. It is compulsory for medicine and combines well with biology for biochemistry and nursing. It is an analytical subject, and, as such, is accepted as being excellent training for careers that involve a rigorous and logical approach, such as law or accountancy.
