Course summary

Course outline Politics is an exciting and relevant subject with an emphasis on contemporary politics and current affairs. It is offered as A level only. Topics studied are: Paper 1: Government & Politics of the UK Paper 2: Government & Politics of the USA and comparative politics (comparing UK and US systems). Paper 3: Political Ideas – a study of three compulsory ideologies: Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism and Anarchism. Lesson structure and expectations It is very important that students who choose politics at A’ level have an interest in it and are prepared to keep up to date with current events in the UK and USA on a regular basis. We will expect students to foster their interest in politics by reading a quality newspaper, regularly visiting politics websites and watching television programmes such as the Politics Show and Question Time. They should keep a record of current developments so they can use them as contemporary examples in their answers. In order to complement their studies, students will be offered the chance to subscribe to Politics Review at a reduced rate. There will also be the opportunity to listen to speakers of different political persuasions and to visit the Houses of Parliament. In recent years, politics students have also had the opportunity to spend a few days in both Brussels and Prague on separate occasions as part of a politics/economics joint educational visit. Course requirements A grade 4 in English. An interest in current affairs and the political process is also essential. Next steps Politics is a highly respected subject, especially by university selectors, particularly if students are going on to study humanities, arts or social sciences. It is viewed positively as it offers diversity from mainstream subjects and as a social science, challenges students in their ability to research, analyse and debate. Furthermore, it will make them much better informed about political affairs. Employment can often be found in the following fields: civil service, local government, banking, public services (e.g. police, health and education), journalism and law.
