

Course outline In year 12 students study three units and will achieve an AS Level equivalent qualification once they have completed 180 guided learning hours – the Level 3 Cambridge Technical Certificate in Business. In year 13 students progress with their studies by completing two further units in order to achieve the full 1 A Level equivalent qualification – the Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Business (360 guided learning hours). Year 12 Units Unit 1: The Business Environment - Externally Assessed Exam (120 GLH). Unit 2: Working in Business - Externally Assessed Exam (60 GLH). Unit 4: Customers and Communication - Internally Assessed Coursework (60GLH). Year 13 Units Unit 8: Introduction to Human Resources - Internally Assessed Coursework (60 GLH). Unit 20: Business Events - Internally Assessed Coursework (60 GLH). Lesson Structure and Expectations The course is a mixture of external exams and internally assessed coursework units which enable students to enhance their knowledge and understanding of business concepts alongside developing their business skills and leadership qualities. Lessons will be very active and involve the study of the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment and the need for organisations to be dynamic and innovative in order to survive. Students will learn that businesses need employees, managers and entrepreneurs who are multi-skilled and independent thinkers. Students will develop an appreciation that in the workplace employees have to work in accordance with organisational protocols, be able to prioritise work and communicate effectively with others in a meaningful way. Students will use ICT to produce coursework assignments and will be expected to be proactive in working with staff and other students to develop their communication, project management and organisational skills as they complete the various units of study. Course Requirements A Grade 4 in both English and Mathematics. Next Steps The subject gives students a wide choice of progression options including further study of business or related disciplines at degree level, vocational training through an apprenticeship scheme or relevant employment in the business sector.
