Course outline Further Maths is a ‘two-block’ option as all the further mathematicians will be blocked together to cover all the A Level Maths content in year 12 and all the Further Maths content in year 13. This course is designed for students who have an aptitude for the subject, who enjoy the subject and are looking to explore more sophisticated mathematical concepts. The further maths qualification is split into Pure (50%), further mechanics (25%) and further statistics (25%), all of which broaden and deepen the content covered in the A Level Maths course. Lesson structure and expectations Students will have up to 20 lessons a fortnight with 4 different teachers. Lessons will be a mixture of teacher-led examples and time given to students to practise new concepts. Where possible technology will be used to explore ideas in more detail and students are encouraged to download Geogebra and Desmos onto their phones or tablets to use in lessons to help their understanding. We expect our students to complete any unfinished work from lessons in their study periods and all students have access to the Maths 6th form study room which can be used as a quiet work space. There are also extra sessions running after school on Wednesdays. All students are expected to have a Casio classwizz FX-991-EX calculator to use in lessons. This calculator can perform the required statistical calculations required for the course that a standard scientific calculator cannot do. Students are also expected to have a lever arch file to keep all their notes organised. Course requirements A grade 7 in mathematics. Over the summer holiday you will be expected to complete a series of questions on the basic skills and techniques that are required at A Level. This will be given to students on the taster day in the summer term. Next steps Any student planning to take a mathematics rich degree will benefit enormously from taking further maths. Some prestigious universities will only accept students with further mathematics qualifications. Students who are not planning to study for mathematics rich degrees but who are keen on mathematics, will find further mathematics a very enjoyable course and having a further mathematics qualification identifies students as having excellent analytical skills.
