Course summary

French is spoken by 74 million people across the world, notably in France and former French territories. Being able to speak French can provide you with travel and work opportunities. In fact, according to the British Council’s 2013 report “Languages for the Future”, 49% of UK businesses look for employees who can speak French, meaning studying the language will be a huge asset to your career. With a projected 750 million speakers by 2050, being able to speak French is a powerful skill to have. Learning French will build your communication, interpersonal, intercultural and public speaking skills. Additionally, French goes well with subjects like English Literature, Philosophy, Theatre, History and Geography, as they are closely linked and can inform each other. Learning a bit about the French Revolution in History? Knowing some French could give you a whole new perspective! Bear in mind too that French is classified as a facilitating subject, which is a subject favoured by top universities for a whole range of degree courses.

How you'll be assessed

100% examination. Paper One: 50% - Listening, Reading and Writing. Paper Two: 20% - Writing two essays based on a film and a novel. Paper Three: 30% - Speaking, based on stimulus cards and IRP.
