

Applied Human Biology is about real life medical science situations. This is the course for you if you enjoy working independently and if you want to study Biology without having to cover too much Mathematics or Chemistry like in Biology A Level. In Year 12 you will study the fundamentals of human biology. This includes human physiology, endocrinology, neurobiology, reproduction and the basics of microbiology. You will also study genetics, looking specifically at inheritance and genetic testing. We will also discuss gene therapy and genetic engineering. Finally, you will study a unit on biomedical techniques. This will require you to plan clinical investigations and write reports. This unit has a practical focus on diagnostic techniques. Year 13 will begin by focusing on health and disease. Looking at cause and effects of diseases, curative management/prevention, and the role of immunology. There will also be a unit on human reproduction, thinking about antenatal care and intervening with infertility. In the final unit you will study drug development where you will produce a clinical research proposal.
