Course summary

This A-Level course will build upon previous knowledge learnt at GCSE and prepare students with designing skills for their future. It will equip them with high-level skills in recognising the design needs of other people and develop an understanding of how current global issues, including integrating technology, impacts on today’s world.

Entry requirements

To study A-Level courses, a student must secure five Grade 5s at GCSE, including English and Maths. To study this A-Level Product Design course, a student must have studied GCSE Design & Technology or Engineering.

How you'll be assessed

Two-year course Coursework: 50% Written theory exam: 50% The theory papers will include open and short-ended questions as well as extended writing questions testing the students’ knowledge of materials, product analysis, health and safety, the wider impacts of design and industrial and commercial practice. The theory papers will also include a 15% mathematical element. Students will undertake the course in a creative and stimulating classroom environment where participation in discussions about recent technological developments and current design are encouraged. Students will be guided through the coursework and theory sections of the A-Level but will need to be independent and organised in their further work beyond the classroom. Students will receive regular feedback on their coursework progress, which may be verbal or written, and they will need to be committed to developing their work to reach their full potential.
