Course summary

Course Outline In Year 12, you will focus on the development and performance of your own choreography and performing within a duo/ trio. You will develop knowledge and understanding of a specific area of study which is currently Rambert Dance Company. Component 1: Performance and choreography. Choreography and Performance: You will choreograph and perform a solo dance, between two and three minutes in duration. You are also required to demonstrate performance skills in a duo/trio. The dance must be between three and four minutes in duration. Component 2:Critical engagement. A written exam with three sections comprising of, short answer questions on own practice, short answer questions on the compulsory area of study (Rambert Dance Company) and two essay questions on both areas of study – compulsory essay and an essay from a choice of four (The romantic ballet period/ American modern dance/American jazz dance/The independent contemporary dance scene in Britain) In Year 13, you will develop skills and knowledge gained at AS level. The focus of choreography is shifted towards group dance. You will develop knowledge and understanding of a specific set works: which include Rooster by Christopher Bruce Component 1: Performance and choreography. You will choreograph a group dance, of three to four minutes, in which you do not perform. You will also perform a solo dance, of two to three minutes, which demonstrates understanding of a performance style linked to a practitioner and perform in a quartet of any style. The solo and quartet dance may be choreographed by the student, teacher or both. Component 2: Critical engagement. This is a written exam where you have to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of two set works. One work is compulsory (Rooster by Christopher Bruce) and the other is optional form a choice of four (Giselle by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot/Appalachian Spring by Martha Graham/Singin’ in the Rain by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly/ Sutra by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui)

Entry requirements

GCSE Dance grade 5 and GCSE English Literature grade 5.

How you'll be assessed

The A Level course is assessed by 50% internal controlled assessment and 50% written exam.
