Course summary

Why take the course? Studying A Level Physical Education will give you a fantastic insight into the world of sports performance. You can perform and improve your performance though the application of theory. You will learn the reasons why we do things and why some people outperform others. You will also delve into the ethical considerations behind the use of drugs and the influence that modern technology is having on sports. Summary of what is studied (specification) Year 12 topics include: joint movement and muscles, analysis of movement, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, diet and nutrition, ergogenic aids, training (aerobic, strength, flexibility), impact of lifestyle, injuries (acute, chronic, prevention and rehab) and biomechanical principles. You will also study skills (classification, methods of practice, transfer, memory models, information processing, group and team dynamics), goal setting, confidence and self-efficacy, leadership in sport, stress management to optimise performance, and sport in the 21st century. Year 13 topics include: diet and nutrition, periodisation of training, fluid mechanics, projectile motion, ethics and deviance in sport, commercialisation and the media, routes to sporting excellence in the UK, modern technology in sport and its impact on participation, fair outcomes, and entertainment. Where could this qualification take you? A Level Physical Education is an excellent base for a university degree in Sports Science, Sports Management, Healthcare, or Exercise and Health. It can also complement further study in Biology, Human Biology, Physics, Psychology, Nutrition, Sociology and many more.
