Course summary

Course outline The A Level course is split into two components. Work is completed over two years of study and assessment takes place at the end of year 13. Unit 1: The personal investigation (60%). You will be required to produce a personal portfolio of work plus an essay which connects to your chosen theme (minimum 1000 words). Unit 2: The externally assessed assignment (40%). You will be required to produce a personal portfolio of work in response to a theme that is provided by the exam board. Students are supported and encouraged to investigate ideas and issues that inspire and interest them throughout the course. You will be expected to research the work of artists and designers from a range of different times, places and cultures and use this to inform the development of your own work. There will be the opportunity to explore a wide range of media, processes and techniques and your teacher will help you to take risks and create exciting and purposeful work. Lesson structure and expectations Nine 1 hour lessons per fortnight plus 5 hours independent study per week (in school and/or at home). Course requirements A grade 5 in art and design and a grade 4 in English language. Next steps Post A Level, you may decide to progress onto a foundation course in art and design, a degree qualification, an internship, an apprenticeship or employment in the creative arts industries.
