Course summary

Course outline Never has this subject been more relevant. With environmental issues in the news almost every single day and an upsurge in the environmental movement this course deals with every aspect of the human impact on the environment at a global level. This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course. Over the two years the following topics will be covered: the living environment, the physical environment, energy resources, pollution, biological resources, sustainability and research methods. Lesson structure and expectations All the units covered highlight real-life issues that an increasing human population has on the planet. The course has a large theoretical emphasis which is backed up with appropriate practical skills for each unit. The style of delivery will include normal classroom teaching backed up with lectures student research and presentations. It is expected that the students will take an active role in their learning by keeping abreast of the news whether it be by watching the news or watching programmes like Countryfile. It is recommended that students actively do some reading around the subject to fully appreciate the concepts covered throughout the course. Some of the practical skills will require the students to perform some local field work to illustrate the skills needed in the field. All of these skills and techniques could be examined in the exam papers. Course requirements A grade 5-5 in a GCSE combined science or a merit in level 2 agriculture. Next steps Previous students have gone on to do degrees in marine biology, biology, agriculture, environmental sciences and environmental business management and is regarded as being an excellent support for the biological sciences. It is widely recognised by many universities as being a science for those courses requiring science in their offers.
