Course summary

Course outline Students will sit the A Level examination at the end of the 2 year course. There are 3 papers in total: Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Translation into English Paper 2: Written response to works and Translation into Spanish Paper 3: Speaking The course has a range of themes and enables students to develop their linguistic skills as well as their understanding of Spanish culture and traditions. The topics covered in Y12 include changes to the family structure, the world of work and tourism, as well as music, festivals and traditions. In Y13 we study immigration, integration and racism, the Spanish Civil War, the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy. The film studied is Pan’s Labyrinth and the literary text is Réquiem por un campesino español. For the Speaking examination, students also complete an Independent Research Project on a topic of their choice relating to the Hispanic world. Lesson structure and expectations A Level Spanish lessons offer a variety of activities, including listening and reading comprehension and speaking practice to improve students’ fluency and spontaneity. Consolidation and extension of grammatical knowledge and developing translation skills will also form a key part of lessons. Students will need to purchase a personal CD player, as in the listening examination they are able to listen to the texts multiple times within the time limit. Additionally, students will undertake independent study in a variety of skills such as listening, reading, translation and research work as well as regular vocabulary learning. Course requirements A grade 5 in Spanish, and a grade 4 English language and literature. Next steps Spanish A Level is well respected by universities and it offers opportunities of travel or work experience in Spanish speaking countries and provides excellent job prospects. It can also be combined with a range of other subjects.
