Course summary

Course outline Classical Civilisation is the study of any and all the fascinating aspects of those cultures which predate the so-called Dark Ages of early Medieval Europe. For the purposes of this course, it focuses on the vibrant political, social, military, philosophical, artistic and literary achievements of the Greek and Roman civilisations between approximately 1000BC and 40BC. Through this study, students develop the critical and evaluative skills (much in demand by leading universities) that will allow them to consider complex societal issues within the fuller sweep of their historical significance. The modules chosen are: The World of the Hero (covering Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid), Greek Theatre (both tragedy and comedy), and The Politics of the Late Republic (how Rome fell from an increasingly modern democracy into the absolute rule of the emperors). Lesson structure and expectations All students will receive 9 taught lessons per fortnight, predominantly in a seminar style with lots of discussion and small group work. They will also be issued with structured work for their private study. Students should be aware of the importance of their participation in lessons, and of the absolute necessity to read the set texts in detail outside of timetabled classes so that lesson time can be used effectively. The exams will be essay based so students should expect the writing of essays to be the predominant way in which ongoing progress throughout the course will be assessed. Course requirements A grade 5 in English literature. Although a background in Roman civilisation, acquired through the study of Latin GCSE is useful, the main skill required is the detailed analysis of texts in their political and social context. A keen interest in the mythology and history of the Bronze Age Mediterranean is also a necessity! Next steps Students who prove successful at A level Classical Civilisation are not only well-versed in the fundamentals of so-called European Culture, they also have developed the skills of analysis and interpretation that are so much in demand for both further study and employment.
