Course summary

Course outline The course comprises 5 units delivered over 2 years by farm staff utilising the farm and science facilities. Students are required to complete units in Animal Welfare and Ethics, Practical Animal Husbandry, Animal Behaviour, Animal Health and Diseases. There is also a Work Experience in the Animal Sector unit which requires the students to perform actual work experience on the farm and prepares them for the world of work. Lesson structure and expectations The units covered within this course bring together the knowledge and understanding with the practical and technical skills that are required for the place of work. All of this is achieved through the students performing vocational tasks to help develop the confidence working with animals and hopefully building on those transferable skills. Students will be given hands-on experience of mammal, bird, reptile and invertebrate species. The students are graded by four internally assessed assignments and one externally assessed unit that consists of an exam and a task set by the exam board. As with other subjects the expectation is that all students will need to spend at least 5 hours of independent study, researching, drafting work and acting on the feedback given to complete the course successfully. Students are also encouraged to volunteer for opportunities such as lambing, to build up their work-experience hours and practical experience. Course requirements A grade 5-5 in a GCSE combined science or a merit in level 2 Agriculture. Next steps The qualification is primarily designed to support progression to employment. Students competing this qualification could access roles in areas such as kennel or cattery assistant, animal care assistant for charities or in retail etc. If the qualification is taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications/ A-Levels it carries UCAS points recognised by universities. It could help gain entry to courses such as BSc (Hons) Animal Management and Welfare, Zoology, Applied Biology, Animal Science etc.
